Leggy Seedlings: How to Prevent It

Leggy seedlings are tall, weak, and floppy — usually caused by lack of light.

Why it happens:

  • Seedlings stretch toward the nearest light source
  • Overcrowding makes plants compete for light
  • Too much heat can speed growth without strengthening stems

Prevention tips:

  • Give seedlings bright, direct light or a grow light for 12–16 hours/day
  • Thin crowded seedlings early
  • Keep seedlings slightly cooler (18–22°C) to encourage sturdy stems
  • Gently support seedlings if needed, but prevention is better than rescue

Grow smarter:
Strong seedlings = stronger adult plants. Good light, proper spacing, and moderate temperatures prevent leggy growth.
